

CHENNAI:The rank list for MBBS, BDS courses for 2015-2016 was released on Monday. A total of 17 students got the first rank by scoring centum and are eligible for MBBS, BDS courses.
Speaking to the media after releasing the list at the Directorate of Medical Education campus, Chennai on Monday, Health Minister Dr C Vijaya Baskar said the authorities here have received formal communication from the Medical Council of India (MCI) to start the new medical college at Omandurar Estate - the first government medical college in Chennai since Independence.
“This year MCI approved all the existing seats, including the 100 new seats at the new medical college. We received official approval letter from MCI four days ago and also for other college seats,” said the minister.
In the last four years, the government managed to get an additional 710 medical seats, he added.
“The first phase of counselling for MBBS, BDS will be conducted from July 19 to 25. The counselling for special category will begin on July 19 and July 20 to 25 counselling for general category will be conducted. The dates will also be announced through advertisement in newspapers and the students can also check the website for details,” said the Director of Medical Education Dr S Geethalakshmi.
For the first time, the counselling venue has been changed from the Directorate of Medical Education campus to the Multi Super Speciality Hospital Block ‘B’.
“We have shifted the venue for the convenience of candidates, as the new campus is very spacious for parking vehicles and also has an air-conditioned auditorium, better toilets and drinking water facilities,” said the health secretary J Radhakrishnan.
Officials added that MCI was yet to give approval for a few self-financing medical colleges, and those seats would be included depending on the time of the counselling. The second phase of counselling for self-financing colleges would be on July 25 and third phase on September 30 as per the Supreme Court order.
There are a total of 2,655 seats in 20 government medical colleges in the State, of which 398 seats are reserved for the All India Quota and 2,257 for State Quota. The rank list is available on www.tnhealth.org and www.tn.gov.in
