95 Sovereigns Stolen from Three Houses

CHENNAI: Burglars struck at two houses in the city’s southern suburbs and reportedly made away with 50 sovereigns of jewellery, while in Chengalpattu 45 sovereigns was looted from a house.

According to police, the burglaries in the suburbs took place at Adambakkam near Guindy and at Madambakkam near Tambaram.

Murali (49), a resident of Nilamangai Nagar and manager in a luxury hotel, had left for Bengaluru with his family on Friday. Returning on Monday, he found the door and cupboards open with nearly 39 sovereign gold jewellery and `60,000 cash missing.

Unsuccessful attempts were made to break open doors of two other houses in the neighbourhood. Police have collected fingerprints from the scene and are investigating.

In a similar incident, the house of CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) personnel was burgled at Madambakkam near Tambaram. Palpandi (36), in his complaint to Tambaram police, said he had left the house locked to visit Tirupati when the burglary took place.

In yet another burglary reported on Monday, robbers looted 45 sovereigns of gold from a house at Chengalpattu. Police sources said the house was locked for last few days since a family member was hospitalised in Chennai. On Monday, Surendran, a family member, who had come to take clothes was shocked to see the doors being opened. The dog in the house was also injured, which police believe was caused by the burglars. The Chengalpattu police is investigating the burglary.
