CHENNAI: Over 100 domestic workers from across the State gathered for the International Domestic Workers Day celebrations organised by National Domestic Workers Movement on Monday.

Vergil D’Sami, executive director, Arunodhaya Foundation, said that domestic workers must be proud of their contribution to society’s growth.

“In one way, they are pillars of society,” she said.

“Workers across the world have become aware of their rights. All of them assembled here should be aware of their rights too. One must learn to ask for more than a Sunday off. They should rise up and ask the government to fix the minimum daily wages for domestic workers,” she added. A handbook detailing awareness and rules for domestic workers travelling from State to State and abroad was released at the function by members of the National Domestic Workers Movement and Vergil D’Sami.

All those gathered at the venue requested the Centre to frame a legislation for domestic workers and ratify the International Labour Organisation Convention 189 on decent work for domestic workers.

The other demands included the State Government to fix daily minimum wage for domestic workers. Workers from the New Avadi Domestic Workers Federation took the stage with a song and dance performance.
