CHENNAI: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has foiled a bid to smuggle 652 kg of ganja worth Rs 65 lakh across the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) on Palk Bay.
A Coast Guard spokesman said that this was the biggest ever haul of narcotics on the Palk Bay by the ICG in recent times. “It was an independent operation by the Coast Guard using its hovercraft near the land end at Dhanuskodi,” the spokesman said.
“The narcotics was found in 23 synthetic sacks consisting of 25 kg bags weighing 652 kg. After analysis with drug detection kit on board the hovercraft, it was confirmed to be ganja,” the spokesman added.
“While we are intensifying the search operation to locate our Dornier and three crew, that went missing on June 8, we are equally alert in foiling any bid to smuggle narcotics across the border,” he said. “We have also undertaken a search operation to nab the culprits. The consignmen was meant to be handed over to the agents across IMBL, he added.
