'Hope for Probe in Asan Fee'

CHENNAI:  After a week-long agitation against fleecing by the Asan memorial school, parents now hope that the education department would conduct an enquiry into the institution collection excessive fee from students.

Even as parents gathered outside the school braving the presence of police, classes resumed for students of 9th to 11th standards.

Parents were up in arms against the school for charging close to double the fee mandated by the Justice Singharavelu fee determination committee.

A parent said, around `60,000 was being charged for kinder-garden students as against the mandated `13,950. Higher fee was being charged for children in all classes, which violated the government rules, parents said. This, despite the interim order of the committee, restraining the school from collecting extra fees, they said.

“We have submitted a petition to the committee and have also met Justice Singharavelu in person to apprise him of the situation,” said a parent representative adding that the school management has not met the agitating parents so far. Parents said a Chief Educational Officer (CEO) would be conducting an enquiry.

The school management could not be reached for comment.
