CHENNAI:  Celebrations at the home of a newly-wed bride turned gloomy on Sunday night after 45 sovereigns of gold jewellery allegedly went missing, even as the family was busy with the festivities.

The incident happened on Second Link Road at CIT Colony in Alwarpet, here, an upscale residential area.

The locality is a posh one and is home to quite a few prominent politicians and yesteryear tinsel screen artistes.

The family was conducting a special ceremony on the ground floor of the house, while a feast was arranged for the guests on the third floor.

Late in the night, some of the households  discovered that the gold jewellery that the bride had kept in a room had gone missing.

They then lodged a complaint with the Mylapore police, under whose jurisdiction the Alwarpet CIT Colony falls.

Several strangers, including those who were called in for decoration work and catering, were present in the house at the time of the incident.

The local police have registered a case and are narrowing down on the suspects.

“We suspect that the thief might have sneaked into the house as a guest and take away the valuables,” a police official said.

“We do not have any CCTV footage from the house. But we have sought footage from other residences in the locality to track the suspect,” a senior police official privy to the investigation said.
