

CHENNAI: Two workers were suffocated to death while cleaning a boiler in a leather factory on the city outskirts near Vandalur on Tuesday.
Police said the accident took place at around 4 pm when the victims, R Ezhumalai (23) and I Muralidharan (36), entered the boiler after spraying an acid to clear the chemical formations inside the vessel. It is suspected that the workers swooned after inhaling the hazardous gases inside and succumbed.
On information, firefighters rushed to the place and rescued the two workers. But, an ambulance staff found them already dead.
While the Kancheepuram police registered a case, the family members and other workers staged a protest demanding adequate compensation to the victims’ families.
A case of causing death due to negligence was registered against officials of Sri Chamundi Leathers Company on Kelambakkam road near Vandalur. Police said they will arrest the those responsible after a preliminary enquiry.
