Anna University Postpones 1st Semester Test to December 28

Anna University today informed the Madras High Court that it was postponing the first semester exams.

CHENNAI: Anna University today informed the Madras High Court that it was postponing the first semester exams for engineering courses to December 28 in view of the heavy rains and floods.

This postponement will be applicable to the engineering colleges situated in flood-hit areas of Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur and Cuddalore districts only, the Government Pleader (GP) informed the first Bench of Chief Justice SK Kaul and Justice TS Sivagnanam on Monday afternoon.

Originally, S Kumar, trustee, Abdul Kalam Vision India Trust, Kodambakkam, made a mention before the Bench in the morning to order postponement of the exams scheduled to begin on December 15. He submitted that the students in affected areas could not get prepare for the exam given the unprecedented rains and floods.

Moreover, the first year students, who had joined straight after completing schooling, were going to face a university exam for the first time and they should not be placed in an uncomfortable situation and the exam should not make them panic. The bench directed the GP to obtain instructions from the university and inform the court of its stand.

Accordingly, the GP informed the Bench in the afternoon that the University was agreeable to postpone the exams to December 28. There were 625 affiliated engineering colleges in the State. The exam for students studying in colleges situated in the rain-hit districts of Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Cuddalore alone migtht be postponed. For all other colleges, the examination will begin as schedueled from December 15, the GP added. The Bench orally directed the University to publish the decision in its website today and file an affidavit in this connection to the court tomorrow.
