CHENNAI: A special sub-Inspector attached to MGR Nagar Police station was shunted out to a different unit after a video of the cop snatching a relief kit from a flood victim spread on social networking sites, on Tuesday. The video, believed to have been shot by another flood victim, had gone viral in message sharing platforms including WhatsApp.

Sources said Kumar, the SSI, had reportedly snatched a bed sheet from an elderly woman in Pillaiyar Koil street in MGR Nagar where some NGOs were disbursing flood relief kits on Dec 11.

In the video, the cop was seen intercepting the woman. Sporting a victorious grin, he left the spot.  “We called him for an inquiry during which he admitted to have taken the bed sheet from the woman. He told us that he took the bed sheet only to give it to another victim who could not come to that spot. Since his claim needs to verified, we have also sought the full video to ascertain the facts”, said a senior police official.
