Consider Plea for Stipend to Fresh Lawyers, Says Madras HC

The Madras High Court directed the State government to consider a plea to grant a stipend to entrants into the profession of lawyers.

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Thursday directed the State government to consider a plea to grant a stipend to entrants into the profession of lawyers.

The First Bench of Chief Justice S K Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana gave the direction while disposing of a PIL from senior advocate Dr A E Chelliah.

The PIL prayed for a direction to the State Home Secretary and the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry (BCTP) to provide a stipend of `5,000 per month for the first year to advocates with the BCTP.

“The Home and Law Departments should bestow their consideration on this request and we hope that they should be able to find some scheme to assist the young members of the Bar,” the Bench said.
