The Team That Fed Chennai During Floods

Socialpedia My Chennai, a joint effort by Sri Siddhanta Foundation, DG Vaishvav College and Akshay Patra, was formed when the city was hit by the recent floods. Its aim is to prepare food during and after the deluge. Volunteers work in two batches daily: 12am to 6am, and 10am to 4pm, where they make Puliogare and Jeera rice on 16 burners. The cooked food would then be cooled and packed in 500 mg food packets that are transported out to the field in trucks for distribution. For many volunteers like Suryaprakash, it has been a different experience in itself. “With university exams in between, some batches of students would prepare food with the gaps in between for study leave. A few others would prepare the food then take time to revise for the exams…the energy was infectious as most were ready even after finishing their exams,” he says.
