Cellphone Thief Held After Chase

CHENNAI: Teynampet police patrol chased and arrested a 20-year-old man after he had allegedly snatched a mobile phone from a pedestrian near Thousand lights while in a passing autorickshaw, in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

Around 1.45 am on Saturday, B Dipankar (20) and his co-worker, A Dibujana, who work as kitchen staff in a hotel near Boat club, were walking home on Gulam Abbas Ali street near Thousand lights. Dipankar was speaking over the phone, when a man in an autorickshaw that was also ferrying other persons, while passing Dipankar, snatched the phone from his hands.

Dipankar raised an alarm alerting a Teynampet police patrol team which gave chase and succeeded in intercepting the auto near Nandanam. While the other occupants managed to escape, police caught hold of one of the guys, S Surya (20) of Nandanam. The auto was taken to the police station and a hunt is on for his associates, Yuvaraj and Mahesh alias Dabba and Ramesh, both from Kannagi Nagar near Semmancherry. Surya was remanded in judicial custody.
