Guru Gita is the Fire of Knowledge

CHENNAI: Agni suddha samam tata jvala paricakadhiya Mantrarajamimam manye ‘harnisam patu mrtyutah O dear one, (having been thoroughly tested) by the intellect, which shines like a flame, I consider Shri Guru Gita to be the greatest of the mantras, to have been purified in the same way that gold is purified in fire.

Out of 8,40,000 species created by the great cosmic creator, the Divine Mother Adi Para Shakti, only the human beings are blessed with the power of intellect, power of comprehension as well as power of speech. Human beings extensively use their intellect and consider it as their crowning glory. However, since a human being is mostly ruled by emotions, the emotions cause his mind to oscillate.

As long as the mind jumps, there is instability, fear, inefficiency and inconsistent performance. Therefore without realising his faculty of discrimination to its full potential, an unrealised soul considers his intellect as the crowning glory.

Lord Shiva in this shloka highlights the fact that for the realised soul, viveka or discrimination is the crowning glory.

Only by being in the Guru’s presence, one is blessed with viveka. Wherever the Guru is revered, there is a flame glowing, there is Light, there is no ignorance or darkness.

Lord Shiva in this shloka says- ‘You are so beautiful, you will become pure and enlightened if you remove the vagaries of your mind and limited intellect through the Guru Gita sadhana. Shri Guru Gita is the mantra-raja. Chant the name and sing the glories of the Guru always. Guru Gita is the greatest mantra since it shows that the Guru is the most important in our lives.

Extract the essence or rasa of Shri Guru Gita and be established in the state of bliss forever.’

However, the Guru Gita cannot be merely confined to comprehending it by our limited mind and intellect. We have to remove the lid of the mind with surrender to the Guru and do deep contemplation or nidhidhyasana upon the truths revealed in each of the shlokas of Shri Guru Gita. Then you will get Shrigandha, the fragrance of Jnana or wisdom. Just like fire burns up the dirt and purifies the gold, the fire of knowledge that resides in Shri Guru Gita burns up all our ignorance, karmas, impurities and we become pure and pristine.

Just like there is fire in the core and four sides of the earth. We should make the Guru’s teachings as the base – foundation as well as the cornerstones of our life. This is because the Guru is the fire of knowledge that keeps burning the unwanted element in us. We should always keep the lamp of awareness of Guru’s teachings burning.
