Noël Caroll to Deliver Lecture

CHENNAI: Apparao Galleries seems to have begun the New Year quite ‘philosophically’! The art combine hasn’t just managed to invite the celebrated American philosopher Noël Caroll to namma Chennai, but has convinced him to deliver a lecture as well. The talk titled, Arthur Danto, the Philosophy of Art, and Contemporary Art Criticism, will deal with the work of the late Art critic and philosopher Arthur Danto.

Noël Caroll, who is indubitably a leading figure in contemporary philosophy of art, is best known for his work in the philosophy of film. Not only has he established himself as a leading academic, but has worked intensively in the fields of art and media as well.Speaking about his upcoming talk, Noël, who is also a former journalist, says, “In this talk I would like to discuss the work of the late Arthur Danto, philosopher of art and critic.” The man, who holds Phds in cinema studies apart from one in philosophy adds, “Through the talk I will attempt to show how his philosophy of art was related to his critical practice and to examine it in contrast to alternative approaches, arguing, for example, that his notion of post historical art is superior to postmodernism.”

The talk will be delivered at The Leela Galleria, Apparao Galleries @ The Leela Palace, Adyar Seaface, MRC Nagar on January 3 at 7 pm. Entry by invitation only
