60-yr-old Accident Victim Gets Rs 3L

CHENNAI: A sexagenarian woman who sustained multiple injuries in a road accident, was awarded a compensation of Rs 3 lakh by the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal, Chennai.

The petitioner S Rani (60), a vegetable vendor and resident of Kodambakkam, was returning to her residence from Kelambakkam around 6 pm on April 4, 2011. As she was walking along the Kelambakkam - Vandalur Road, a lorry, allegedly driven in rash and negligent manner, hit her, causing multiple grievous injuries.

Rani was rushed to a private hospital in Sholinganallur, where she was under treatment for 48 days. Thazhambur police registered a case in this regard against the lorry driver.

Rani moved the tribunal seeking compensation of Rs 6 lakh from the owner and insurer of the vehicle.

Observing that  the driver was responsible for the accident, Judge J Chandran directed the insurer to pay a compensation of Rs 3 lakh to the petitioner in two months.
