Strokes in the Spirit of Salvation

CHENNAI: Moksh, an exhibition by a group of artists, is a blend of the antique and contemporary. The exhibition features artists Sachin Jaltare, Srikanth Kurva, Saraswathi and Ramesh Gorjala.

In a vignette of colours, Moksh, which means salvation, aims to blend a number of narratives that take the identity of both the form and formless. With detailing and sensitivity, the artists have worked on imagery that comprises the forms of Hindu gods, albeit with a modern twist. If Saraswathi has presented the magic of Radha and Krishna in distinct expressions, Jaltare seems enchanted by Shiva and his many metamorphoses — both figurative and abstract.

Kurva, who is an expert in water colours and collage work, seeks expression in bulls and roosters in a rich banarasi material. Gorjala’s Hanuman, Vishnu and Buddha take a modern shape.

Talking to CE, Preeti Garg of Gallery Veda says, “The series is titled ‘Moksh’ since all the works presented have some sort of mythical representation or spirituality involved. The colours, hues and textures differ, but they all seem to seek liberation in different expressions.”

She adds that all four Hyderabad-based artists came together with their highly individualised styles that merge on the platform where the old-world and the modern meet.

“In their bright hues, all the works have a native charm in all its grand splendour Also, with rural imagery it gives out a prehistoric impression with a modern touch,” she adds.

Moksh’s preview is on January 18 at 5.30 pm at Gallery Veda at Shilpa Architects,The Muse, L 20, Dr Vikram Sarabhai Industrial Estate, Near SRP Tools Junction (OMR) Phase II, Velachery Taramani Link Road, Taramani.
