Missing Boy Washed Ashore Dead

CHENNAI: The body of a 19-year-old boy, who got drowned in sea near Gummidipoondi on Saturday, was washed ashore, on Monday.

R Naveen, a resident of Eguvarpalayam village, had gone to the beach, along with his friends, on Saturday, to take bath. While taking bath, he got dragged into the sea by the rough waves. He could not be saved despite the best efforts of his friends. On Monday morning, he was washed ashore, dead. “Even yesterday, with the help of fishermen, we were trying to locate him. The fishing boats were trying hard to find if he was still alive as he knew swimming. But this morning, the villagers noticed the body on the shores,” said a police officer.

While usually several sea drowning cases are reported on Kaanum Pongal day, this year this is the first case as the city police had strictly barred bathing in Marina and Besant Nagar beaches. Barricades were placed to prevent people from getting close to waters and strict police vigilance also made sure people did not cross the barricades.
