Thief Jumps into Canal from Train

CHENNAI:Given a choice between police custody and an evening bath in the stinking Buckingham canal, Vinoth (24) chose the latter.

On Friday, while trying to run from railway police on the Vijaywada-bound Pinakini Express, Vinoth from Guntakal district who had snatched a bag jumped into the canal when the train crossed Basin Bridge junction. After snatching the bag, Vinoth had begun running towards another coach but soon came face to face with a constable. As he tried to run back, the passengers raised an alarm and pulled the chain, bringing the train to a halt.

The bag snatcher threw out his booty and jumped into the canal. The constable informed his colleagues at Basin Bridge junction, who nabbed Vinoth while he was wading through the muck. He was charged with snatching and kept in custody.
