Woman Dies as Bus Overturns Near Tiruttani

CHENNAI: A woman from Chennai was killed and 18 others suffered injuries when a government bus toppled near Tiruttani on Monday.

Police said the incident happened when the bus driver tried to avoid hitting a two-wheeler in front and lost control as he swerved.  As the wheels moved over a ditch, the bus toppled and turned upside down.

There were nearly 30 passengers on the bus on route 212H, shuttling between Tiruttani and Tirupati.

The bus was crossing T V Puram village when the motorbike moving ahead suddenly applied brakes forcing the driver Kanniappan to swerve. While 18 passengers suffered injuries, Vijayashanthi (25), who was sitting near the entrance, died on the spot. She was a resident of Thirumullaivoyal and returning from a trip to Tirumala. Tiruttani police have registered a case.
