Art Space turns Jiu Jutsu Ground

Art Space turns Jiu Jutsu Ground

CHENNAI: The walls that till date, saw only visitors silently scanning the paintings hung on them, will witness a flurry of activity this summer. Splatter Studio is set to transform its gallery space into a stage for dance, stand up comedy, skit, jiu jutsu and more! K Senthil Ram, director of the studio, tells us that this is probably the first time any gallery in India is opening up its space for a combination of other art forms.

“Though it is a common thing in European countries, where galleries sometimes even double up as night clubs, I haven’t seen it anywhere in India. Splatter Studio believes in promoting talent from all creative platforms, and hence we thought of bringing it all under one roof at a time when the holiday spirit is high among people in the city,” he says.

Day one of the four-day summer fest titled Umbershoot, will include Music by Fiddle and the keys, day two will include a Brazillian Jiu Jutsu display by Cary Edwards and First Contact MMA, and dance by 5th Element breakers, day three will see a fashion show by Jeevitha Perumal from D.Signd and Nivetha Joseph along with music by DJ Prabhu, and day four will include a mime and skit by Pegasus Media along with stand up comedy by Vikram, Vikash and Deepu.

“We have tried to bring in the unique art forms to the fore. For example, most people do not know about Jiu Jutsu. When it comes to martial arts, people are only aware of kung fu and karate, but Jiu Jutsu is one of the best, especially when it comes to women’s self defence,” says Senthil. “Similarly, not many are aware of the concept called Hydroponics, developed by city-based company Future Farms. The concept involves planting and maintaining vegetables without the use of soil. The company will be setting up a stall at our venue as part of the fest,” he adds.

Besides, there will be a stall by Temple Adventures to brief people about scuba diving, another one displaying safety pin jewellery by Neeladayakshi and others like Ashvita, Unemployed Brains, Pachisi and Kraft Cult.

Tickets for the event from May 14 to 17, between 5 pm and 9 pm everyday, are priced at `200 for one day, `350 for two, `500 for three and `600 for four days. Tickets can be purchased from US 101 - T Nagar, GRT Grand - T Nagar, That Madras Place - Adyar, Pets 101 - Besant Nagar, Maal Gaadi- Besant Nagar, Harley and Me - Panaiyur, Ashvita Fine living store - Adyar, Ashvita Bistro - Alwarpet and Ashvita Nirvana - Besant Nagar.
