CHENNAI:The missing IT employee who was produced before Guindy police by two policemen was reportedly held at a hotel in Eekattuthangal since Wednesday morning.
The policemen who claimed to be from Uchipuli police station, Ramanathapuram detained the city based IT firm staff Umar Gayam (34), after they summoned him for questioning about his younger brother, Ajees’ friend Vijayaraj who allegedly eloped with a girl from a well off family.
Speaking to Express about the detention, Samsudeen, Umar’s elder brother, said the two policemen took Umar, who was working as HR executive in the IT firm, on Wednesday morning and went around the city in an SUV for some time.
“Later they took him to a hotel in Eekattuthangal where they kept him illegally and questioned him till Thursday night. A person named Thangaraj called me then and told me Umar was in their custody,” said Samsudeen. “He asked me to pay `3 lakh and hand over Ajees in exchange for Umar Gayam,” he said.
“We were really scared after the mobile phones were switched on to contact us on Thursday. Thankfully, they have not done anything to Umar,” he added.
“It was only after the issue was flashed in the media that my brother was produced before Guindy police without demanding money. I hope it was to retrieve the jewellery pledged by Vijayaraj, who allegedly eloped with the woman,” said another relative of Umar.
“Now, they have Ajees in their custody and are questioning him to find out where Vijayaraj is,” he added.
The officials of Uchipuli police station had denied that a person named Thangaraj was attached to the station.
