World Lupus Day Observed

CHENNAI: Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital observed World Lupus Day recently with their theme this year being ‘Tame Your Wolf, Tame Your Lupus’.

World Lupus Day is celebrated on May 10 every year. “Compared to men, more women, particularly the child-bearing age group are affected by the disease. The disease ratio of women to men is 9:1. Mostly genetic and environmental stimuli are the causes for the same. But there is not enough awareness about the disease,” said Dr Rajeswari, head, Department of Rheumatology.

According to her, out of 150 out-patient cases everyday, four have lupus. The symptoms of the disease are hair fall, red rashes particularly on the face, etc. The disease, if not treated early will turn fatal. Though there is no cure for the same, continuous right medication will keep lupus under control.  The disease might affect joints, kidneys, brain and other vital organs as well.
