CHENNAI: A few drinks and a trivial argument was all it took for a couple to abandon their six-month-old baby on the street and walk away. The infant was rescued by police and is currently receiving treatment in a hospital.

Passersby noticed the baby boy lying abandoned on Cemetery Road in Old Washermenpet on Saturday night and alerted the police control room. A police patrol was informed, which rushed to the spot and took the baby to the government Stanley hospital. The baby had suffered minor bruises and swelling on the forehead. Subsequently, police traced the infant’s parents, Rajendran (36) and Gangadevi (34), who were found in an inebriated condition in the vicinity. As both of them were drunk, police could not exact any information from the couple. Since they were clothed in rags, officials provided them fresh set of clothes.

After they turned sober, the couple informed police that they hailed from Nagapantal village in Jeyankondam in Ariyalur district and were working in a brick kiln at Panruti. The woman is married to Rajendran and has two more children from a previous relationship. The two kids are being raised at a home in Tondiarpet and the couple used to come to the city every week to see them.

The third child was born to the couple at Rajiv Gandhi Women and Child Hospital in Puducherry. “It appears that the couple came to the city on Saturday morning to visit the two children. While they were returning, they both got drunk and got into a quarrel. At some point, they dumped the child on the road and walked away,” said a senior police official.

“The argument was about some trivial issue. But the two were definitely not in their senses and did not realise what they were doing. Fortunately, the baby did not suffer any major injuries. Now, the mother is with the child. We have verified that the baby was born to Rajendran,” the official said adding that the baby was stable and may be discharged soon.
