'More BSNL WiFi Hotspots for City'

CHENNAI: With BSNL’s various plans to improve connectivity in the State, uninterrupted communication might soon be a reality.

The public sector giant is planning to roll out an extra four lakh metres of cables to connect the remote areas of the State.

Speaking at an event organised by the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) to mark 150th anniversary of the first International Telegraph Convention recently, S Ganesan, Senior General Manager of BSNL, said  that while voice traffic had gone down, there was a marked increase in data. This clearly meant an increase in 3G usage.

He further said that the project to connect remote areas would be completed within two  years. “BSNL is also planning to set up more WiFi hotspots across the city,” he added.

Speaking about the National Knowledge Network (NKN), which intended to establish network connections between universities and colleges across the State, Ganesan said, “Around 75 per cent of the dues for the project has been paid by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and 25 per cent by the colleges.” More than 100 engineers participated in the event.
