Ryot Seeks Direction to Reconstruct Road

CHENNAI:  A farmer from Sendurai Taluk in Ariyalur district moved the Madras High Court on Wednesday alleging that Ramco Cements has encroached upon a public road used by people of 25 villages for more than two decades.

P Elanchezhiyan, of Marungoor, Thular, Sendurai Taluk, Ariyalur, approached the court seeking direction to the Collector to take appropriate action to re-construct Kodukkur-Manakkudayan road that was allegedly damaged and encroached upon by Ramco Cements. He stated that the road was constructed in 1997-98. Even before the said construction, the road was used by people of about 25 villages around Sendurai Taluk for over two decades. But, to everyone’s surprise, on March 25, Ramco Cements encroached upon the road and damaged it. When the villagers questioned the act and petitioned the district authorities, they refused to take any action stating the entire road belonged to the cement company, he said.

Admitting the petition, the Vacation Bench directed notice to the district authorities returnable by June 10.
