CHENNAI: The District Collector in Vellore has been directed by the Madras High Court to verify whether all necessary permissions have been obtained for quarrying sand on the banks of river Palar in the district.
Acting on a PIL from one Sekar, the first bench of Chief Justice SK Kaul and Justice MM Sundresh gave the direction, on Wednesday. The Collector should examine the representations dated January 25 and 28 of the petitioner and villagers and respond to them within a month, after verifying whether all necessary permissions were obtained by the owners and whether quarrying is confined only to the area and depth permitted, the order said.
