CHENNAI: Two 16-year-old schoolboys died while their friend suffered grievous injuries after the two wheeler they were driving was hit from behind by a container truck near Puzhal on Saturday morning. This is the second mishap in five days involving school children driving motorcycles.
All the three boys were friends from Madhavaram. They left home on Saturday claiming to attend a special class at their school in Madhavaram.
The deceased were identified as R Saran and U Tamil Selvan, while their friend, S Sushin Kumar (17) survived with injuries but is canvalescing at the hospital. Saran and Sushin Kumar are neighbours while Tamil Selvan lived nearby in Madhavaram locality.
Around 11 am, they left their homes and were on their way to Ambattur through Puzhal when the gruesome accident happened. They were riding down the Puzhal-Maduravoyal bypass when the truck behind rammed them near Puzhal, throwing the trio to the ground.
Saran and Tamil Selvan died on the spot while Sajin Kumar was taken to a nearby clinic and later admitted to Government Stanley Hospital where he is said to be in a critical condition.
Madhavaram Traffic Investigation Wing has registered a case and are looking for the truck driver who fled.
A probe had shown the boys were heading to meet a friend. The bike belonged to Tamil Selvan’s father Umapathy.
On Tuesday, V Vittal Raj, a class 12 student at a private school in Vepery died after he lost control of his bike and came under the rear wheels of a MTC bus on the Purasawalkam-Doveton flyover. The boy had taken his elder brother’s 150 cc motorcycle to take the practical exams in school when he met with the fatal accident.
The Directorate of School Education has been issuing circulars since 2013 asking schools to ban students from bringing two-wheelers to campus. However, the school authorities don’t seem to have taken steps to control their students, police said.
