SRMU to join nationwide indefinite strike from July 11

The general strike has been called by the national Joint Action Council, representing about 40 lakh employees working in postal, defence, railway and other central government departments.

CHENNAI: The Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU) on Tuesday announced it's decision to join hands with other central government employees in the proposed nation-wide indefinite strike from July 11.

The general strike has been called by the national Joint Action Council, representing about 40 lakh employees working in postal, defence, railway and other central government departments.

Scrapping of new pension system, addressing wage disparities and giving up privatisation of railways and other PSUs are among their charter of 36 demands.

Addressing mediapersons here, SRMU General Secretary N Kanniah said if the decision to privatise railways was not withdrawn the poor would suffer due to increased fares.

The strike notice to the Southern Railway General Manager would be served on June 9, he added.
