Close shave for 10 after bus rams transformer

CHENNAI: A  major tragedy was averted on Central Avenue at Korattur when an MTC bus rammed an electric transformer leaving it mangled on Monday night. Fortunately, there was no electrocution.

Around 10 passengers travelling in the bus had a miraculous escape in the accident that happened hardly 100 metres away from the Korattur police station. Police said, around 10 pm, bus route number 7B plying from Broadway to Korattur was on Central Avenue towards Korattur bus depot when it was raining heavily. The driver, who claimed he could not see the road clearly due to the rains, took a left turn and rammed into the electric transformer. The windshield was damaged.

“The shocked MTC passengers jumped out of the vehicle and escaped as it was a high voltage transformer that could have caught fire from spark. Soon after, there was a power cut in the locality. A girl’s mobile phone and ATM card reportedly went missing during the chaos,” the officer added.

A case has been registered with the Ponamallee Traffic Investigation against MTC bus driver K Saravanan (27) under section 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 427 (mischief causing damage worth `50).
