CHENNAI: Even while the controversy - about city police picking up a teenager from Kannagi Nagar, beating him up, and then realising that they had picked up the wrong person - is yet to settle down, another harassment complaint against police has surfaced.
An auto driver S Veeramani (43), of Nehru Nagar, Velachery, approached the Guindy police station on Saturday to file a complaint claiming that his son Ranjith (22) was pushed to attempt suicide after a traffic sub-inspector allegedly bullied him to pay more bribe to avoid action in an accident case.
In his complaint, Veeramani alleged that the sub-inspector, Saravana Baskar, attached to the Tambaram traffic investigation wing, pushed his son to try commit suicide. Veeramani said his son, Ranjith, had hit a pedestrian in December 2015 while returning from a local grocery store where he worked.
"The SI, after enquiry took `5000 from my son for not registering a case. The pedestrian suffered minor injuries," Veeramani asserted in his complaint.
The SI kept calling Ranjith for more money and
threatened to file cases if the payment was not made. Pushed by the cop, an upset Ranjth tied to commit suicide by hanging himself in their house on Friday night. Luckily his sister noticed and alerted the neighbours, who saved Ranjith.
"We have issued a Community Service Register (CSR) based on the complaint. Further probe is on," police said
