Student Slips From MTC Bus, Falls, Injured

CHENNAI:  Manish Kumar (22) of Bihar, a final year engineering student of Satyabama University, Sholinganallur, was badly injured when he slipped from an MTC bus near Injambakkam on East Coast Road (ECR) Tuesday morning.

According to police, the youth was standing close to the rear door collecting his bus tickets from the conductor and lost balance when the driver applied sudden brakes.

The fellow passengers including his friend Ranjith Kumar complained that the driver did not close the door and Manish slipped once the bus ran over a pit in the road, a result of expansion works.

They also alleged that the driver sped past without noticing that the road was dug up and Manish fell down hiting his head on the road when the driver applied sudden brakes.

Police said the accident took place around 11.30 am, just five minutes after he boarded the bus. He was on his way to Ambattur Industrial Estate to complete his project work.

Other passengers in the same bus and passers-by rescued Manish and admitted him in a private hospital in Perumbakkam. Doctors who treated him said he sustained severe head injuries along with multiple fractures on his skull as he fell and hit his head. After surgery, he was moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).  Cases have been registered for negligent driving by traffic investigation police who are probing. Police also informed the student’s parents who were on their way to the city.
