CHENNAI: A 30-year-old woman was killed after an earthmover crane knocked her off near her residence on GN Chetty road in T Nagar on Friday morning.

M Nirmala, a domestic help, was on her way to the garbage dump where she was working when she met with the accident, police said. She was walking along the service lane off the GN Chetty Road around 11.45 am when the earthmover vehicle roped in for Metro Rail work hit her from behind.

“She was only a few meters away from her residence in M K Radha Nagar in Teynampet,” a police officer said. Nirmala came under the wheels of the vehicle and died on the spot. Police rushed to the scene and moved her body to the Royapettah GH for autopsy.

Investigations revealed that the earthmover driver had swerved his vehicle to avoid hitting a tree branch and hit the woman. The driver fled the scene fearing a mob rage, police said.

Nirmala was survived by husband and three kids.
