CHENNAI: The city police on Saturday arrested an autorickshaw driver on Saturday for allegedly dumping demonetised `500 notes into a dustbin near Madurantakam bus-stand.
Soon after the demonetisation announcement was out, attempts to re-channel or dispose of black money have come under the government scanner.

In this backdrop, a picture of two autorickshaw drivers dumping currency notes went viral on WhatsApp and other social networking sites on Friday.

Once the police tracked the location, they began a door-to-door enquiry to identify the men seen in the picture. During their look out, the cops found out that man standing idle within the frame was A Hanifa (26), a resident of Kadaperi, an auto driver.

Hanifa informed the police the man involved in this suspicious act was V Santhakumar (32), a resident of Theradi Veethi in Madurantakam, also an auto driver.

Based on this, Santhakumar was arrested. Contrary to what was circulated in social media sites as an attempt to dispose of black money, Santhakumar told the cops that `3,500 cash which he dumped into the bin was his monthly earning.

Police said that he had acted out of frustration that he felt after getting to know that the notes would not be valid anymore. A case was filed under section 294 of the IPC (Obscene act in public place) and further investigations are on.
