CHENNAI: Revival of the Rs 1,800 crore Chennai Port-Maduravoyal elevated corridor project, stalled for over six years, has now given a new lease of life to Chenai Port’s proposed dry port multi-modal logistics hub in Sriperumbudur.

The Rs 100 crore project on a 121-acre of land in Mappedu, initially thought to be a non-starter after the elevated corridor was stalled, is now back on track. Chennai Port Trust Chairman P Raveendran told reporters here that efforts to revive elevated corridor, an expressway, has given a fresh lease of life to the logistics hub.

The proposed hub was to serve units in Sriperumbudur and Oragadam, which are major automobile and telecom manufacturing zones. The expressway is being studied by a committee which would submit its report in the next two months, he said.

The dry port was supposed to have an inland container depot or off-dock container freight station, container yard, rail and road connectivity to national rail and road network, trade centre, warehouses for containerised cargoes such as leather garments, textiles, automotive components and electronic hardware.

On developing Puducherry Port as satellite Port, Raveendran said dredging work has been started. “We want the port to be operational soon,” he added.

According to him, the 30 km Ennore-Manali Road Improvement Project (EMRIP) might be completed with the eviction of 446 families in Nalla Thanner Odai Kuppam along the Coastal road by the state government to nearby areas. “The shifting of NTO kuppam and fish stalls in fishing harbour had been an issue. The state government is on resolving it. We are now building a auction platform for the fishermen,” said Raveendran.

He also highlighted that Chennai Port was introducing Enterprise Resource Planing System along with five other ports to enable ease of doing business.
