
CHENNAI: The price of your gas cylinder has gone up by Rs 2 in Chennai as part of the Union government’s move to eliminate all subsidies by March next year. The gas cylinder that cost you Rs 465.56 last month in now priced at Rs 467.35.
However, the good news is that the price of non-subsidised cylinder has come down by Rs 41. The price of non-subsidised cylinder, which was Rs 574 last month, is now priced at Rs 533.
Indian Oil Corporation sources said the government had recently ordered State-run oil companies to raise subsidised cooking gas (LPG) prices by Rs 4 per cylinder every month. Public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs) have been authorised to increase the price of subsidised domestic LPG cylinder by Rs 2 per cylinder (14.2-kg) per month (excluding VAT) since July 1, 2016. Oil companies had hiked LPG rates on several occasions since then.
The price of subsidised gas cylinder has been rising from November 2016 till July 1, 2017. The steepest was Rs 31 in July when it went up from Rs 434.15 to Rs 465.56.
There are as many as 18.11 crore customers of subsidised LPG in the country. These include 2.5 crore poor women who were given free connections during the last one year under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojna. There are another 2.66 crore users of non-subsidised cooking gas.
