Ambulance assn restrained from going on strike
Chennai: The Madras High Court has restrained the 108 Ambulance Workers Union of Tamil Nadu in Madurai from resorting to a strike from 8 pm on October 17 to 8 pm the next day. A bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar granted the injunction while passing interim orders on a PIL from S Partick of Egmore, seeking to declare the strike as illegal. “Any member refraining to drive ambulance and perform duty in case of emergency either on Oct 17 or 18, will do so at their own risk of consequences thereof, including penalising for gross contempt of court,” the bench said.
Santhanam granted advance bail in assault case
Chennai: Comedian actor Santhanam, who apprehended arrest in connection with an assault case, was granted advance bail by the Madras High Court on Friday. Justice N Audhinathan, who granted the relief, said Santhanam can be released on bail in the event of arrest, on his executing a personal bond for D25,000 with two sureties each for a like sum. He should appear before the Valasaravakkam police station daily for two weeks, the judge added. Earlier, the judge was told that advocate Prem Anand, who was also allegedly attacked by the actor, was taking treatment in a private hospital.
Plea to stay ‘Mersel’ release rejected
Chennai: A division bench of the Madras High Court has rejected a plea to stay the release of Tamil feature film ‘Mersel’, scheduled to be screened on October 18, Diwali day. Now that the appeal has been dismissed, Thenandal Studios LImited at Nungambakkam and Sri Thenandal Films at Saligramam can go ahead with the release of the film starring Vijay, Samantha and Nithya Menon. Meanwhile, the court restrained over 40 website firms from uploading or enabling third parties to copy, reproduce, distribute, display through cable or online medium of ‘Mersel’, through the ISPs.
Private firms told to file info on campus recruitments
Chennai: The Madras High Court has directed private IT and multinational companies to submit details with regard to the appointment of candidates through campus interviews. Justice N Kirubakaran wanted the details while passing interim orders on a writ petition from S K Natarajan of Tirupur district, who alleged irregularities in the appointments. The judge directed NASSCOM, Wipro, TCS, Infosys and Accenture to furnish details with regard to the appointments made for the past eight years, number of campus interviews conducted and the yardstick for selection.
