CHENNAI:At some point in our lives, most of us may have struggled to choose the right gifts for friends or family for a special occasion. In the West, there is the concept of a gift registry, where the host can upload the gift items needed, and guests can choose which ones to buy. Wishtry, a Mumbai-based company, has replicated this in India.
Founded in October 2016, the website was the brainchild of Aditi Mehta and Shailie Parekh. “The idea of starting a gift registry came to us during a friend’s wedding. Though it was clearly mentioned not to get gifts, the couple received an undesired lot from their friends and family. We thought it would be better if they had prepared a list of items they desired and sent it out to their near and dear ones,” says Shailie, co-founder and vice president, Wishtry.
The online gift registry allows a user to browse through different websites, select the gifts and add them to Wishtry list. One can curate a wish-list with handpicked items from various online stores, and share it with family and friends.
The concept is new to India and is catching up fast, say the founders. “India is at its developing stage and is embracing innovative ideas. Introduction of gift registries not only reduces the pain of unwanted and duplicated gifts but also reduces the confusion of what to gift,”she explains.
Since this concept is originally from the West, they had to do a lot of homework for a gifting registry to be accepted in the Indian market. They introduced the concept on receiving a positive feedback from friends and family. “We noticed that youngsters do not prefer to go to a mall to purchase gifts. This made us sure of our concept,” she adds.
Over ` 20 lakh has gone in to make this idea into a reality, which was procured from within the team. Their USP lies in the fact that they do not hold any inventory. At any given point, a user who is creating a gift registry on Wishtry can select and add an item from any store (both online and offline).
What about their future plans? “Our aim is to collaborate with websites which are trending, along with portals which are more user-focussed. We plan to form a robust network of affiliates to give our customers a wide variety of choices across genres,” elaborates Shailie. They also provide cash gift funding options. Shailie says that one of the biggest plans in the pipeline is to have their own barcode scanners, wherein one could go to a store and just scan the barcode of a product, and it would automatically be added to Wishtry. “We also want to tie up with small stores and websites who would like to promote their products on our site,” she says.
