CHENNAI: Superstar Rajinikanth’s birthday saw unusually muted celebrations this year even though murmurs of his political plunge continue to do the rounds in the State that has seen two other actors, Kamal and Vishal, also make a political entry in the last few months.

While some fans who spent the entire day outside the actor’s residence at Poes Garden claimed that a representative of Rajini told them the actor would not be celebrating his 67th birthday on account of destruction caused by Cyclone Ockhi, it wasn’t confirmed on his official twitter account. But if the claim is true, it will complete a hat-trick of ‘uncelebrated’ birthdays for the actor. He had refused to celebrate his birthday for the last two years on account of cyclone ‘Vardah’ and the Chennai floods.

Despite his absence, a sizeable number of fans camped outside his residence the entire day, hoping to get a glimpse of their Thalaivar. “Rajini sir left early in the morning and won’t be back until midnight at least,” repeated a police officer to every fan. “It’s been almost a decade since I last met him on his birthday. I come here every year and wait. It has become a habit,” said Senthil who had come all the way from Tirupur.

Reeking of alcohol, he sat on the road outside Rajini’s house least bothered about dirtying his white dhoti and despite requests from police to vacate the place. “I stay here till 9 usually,” he said.

He refused to comment on Rajinikanth’s plunge into politics but for others, it was a topic of interest. “Baba Rajyam (rule of Baba, his character in the 2002 movie) is coming soon. He is just waiting for the right time,” said Rajini Gowri.

She claimed that a meeting with Thalaivar would be arranged at Raghavendra Mandapam in the next few days and there would be more clarity about his entry after the meeting. “Kamal and Vishal are just small fish,” she said, when Express asked about their strides into politics.

The conversation was short lived, however, with her concern turning toward other fans who had not eaten.“He (Rajini ) is our Kuladeivam (family deity) and we must eat and celebrate or else he will have to face the consequences of our actions,” she told fellow fans.

As the sun went down, fans slowly began the journey back after exchanging numbers, discussing their favourite Rajini avatars and sharing multiple cups of tea.

Surprisingly at 5:30 pm, ‘Tirupur’ Senthil said his goodbyes. With all the waiting, the intoxication seemed to be wearing off.
