CHENNAI: An elderly woman died after falling into a 60-feet dry well without a parapet wall in the backyard of her home at Ambattur in the city on Monday evening.
According to police, M Saroja (70), of Varalakshmi Nagar, Ambattur, was alone as the family members had gone to attend a temple function.
She was believed to have taken a stroll in the backyard. The wooden planks put up to cover the well gave away when she stepped on them.

When the family members returned in the evening, they searched for her.
One of them noticed the wooden planks in disarray, and soon Saroja’s body was found at the bottom of the 60-feet well.
On being alerted, Fire and Rescue Service personnel from Ambattur Estate station rushed to the spot and retrieved the body.

“She hit her head on the ground and died within the well,” said a fire service personnel.
Officials said the well was used only when it rained, and was otherwise kept covered.
Amabttur police have registered a case under the CrPC Section 174 (unnatural death).
