CHENNAI: While railway officials remain clueless about the sudden spike in the accidents at the St Thomas Mount station, Chennai Divisional Railway Manager Naveen Gulati said that suburban trains including fast locals would not be operated in the fast lines until further notice. The wall, which is dividing platform Nos. 3 and 4, was built a few years ago in view of the merger of the Velachery-Beach MRTS with St. Thomas Mount.

The Chengalpattu-Chennai Beach fast locals during morning hours run with overcrowded passengers and pass through the fast line. Similarly, four fast trains operated in the fast lines between Chennai Beach and Chengalpattu pass through the fast lines at St. Thomas Mount. While four fast trains have been regularly operated in the stretch for several years, the Railways fully blamed the rail passengers for the accidents.

Tamil Nadu Railways Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) C Sylendra Babu, who visited the St. Thomas Mount station, said he would recommend to the Railways to remove the wall. However, the Southern Railway said the wall cannot be removed.

Platform 3 is very narrow at st Thomas mount. The wall needs to be there. Commuter should avoid footboard travel after they get on to a train and make sure they are well inside the train after journey starts
