Chennai: Five arrested in connection with 14 knife-point robberies

CHENNAI: Six days after 14 robberies, which were committed at knife-point in various parts of the city, the Chennai city police arrested five persons, including a juvenile, and recovered instruments worth Rs 3 lakh.

The incidents occurred in the intervening night of Sunday and Monday in a gap of four hours in central and southern areas of the city. Police identified the accused as V Suresh (19), S Vignesh (19), S Vignesh (19), R Bakkiyaraj (20) and a 17-year-old juvenile.

Police seized Rs 3 lakh worth 12 mobile phones, one laptop and two two-wheelers. The five were linked to two robberies wherein the gang snatched a mobile phone from a call taxi driver and a woman.

“On June 11, around 3am, P Perumal (32), a call taxi driver was speaking in his mobile when the gang on a bike snatched the instrument at knife point and escaped. Later, the gang snatched away a mobile from R Kenikasha (24) after threatening to stab her,” said a police officer.
