NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said the Covid-19 situation was under control and that it had belied its own projections which had said that the disease could spread by leaps and bounds. Giving out the numbers, Kejriwal said as per earlier projections, by June 30 it was predicted that the number of active corona virus cases would be 60,000 but it 26,000 as of now.

“According to our earlier projections, by June 30 there would be around 1 lakh cases in Delhi, out of which 60,000 would be active cases and around 15,000 beds would be needed in the hospitals,” Kejriwal said. But as of Wednesday, there are about 87,000 cases only.

According to the government, the recovery rate had significantly improved in the last few days, reaching 66 per cent. The daily number of fresh cases is also reducing. A few days ago, the government had projected around 5.5 lakh cases by July end, which the Delhi government says was based on the formula of calculation provided by the BJP-led central government.

The CM said he had sought help from everyone and appealed to them to come together to help tackle the increasing number of coronavirus patients.“During that time, 250 new patients were added every day, which created a scare in the system that 250 beds will have to be increased on a daily basis. Today, I have seen on the app, there are 5,800 corona patients in all the hospitals in Delhi.

One week back, there were 6,250 patients in the hospitals, which means 450 patients have decreased in the hospitals.” As per government estimates, out of the 87,000 total corona patients, 58,000 have recovered. There were 8,500 beds in the hospitals one month back but now the situation has changed and at least 15,000 beds in hospitals and hotels have been added.

“On 23rd June, there were 3,950 fresh cases in Delhi and yesterday (Tuesday) there were only 2,200 new cases, which means that the daily number of new cases is also decreasing and it has been around 2,000 for the last 3-4 days,” the CM said.

The Delhi government, which has claimed that the city has the highest rate of testing in the country, said the positivity rate was also declining. Earlier, 31 people out of 100 tested would turn out to be positive, now only 13 out of 100 people are found to be infected with the virus.
