NEW DELHI: Delhi’s Director General (Prisons) Sandeep Goel was on Friday transferred and asked to report to the police headquarters, days after this newspaper broke the story of jailed conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar alleging he was forced to pay Rs 10 crore as protection money.

IPS officer Sanjay Beniwal (1989-batch AGMUT cadre) has been appointed the new DG (Prisons). Beniwal was last year transferred from Chandigarh to Delhi and given the newly created post of Special Commissioner, Perception Management and Media Cell in the Delhi Police.

Chandrashekhar had written to Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena levelling serious allegations of extortion against Goel and jailed AAP minister Satyendar Jain. Currently lodged at Delhi’s Mandoli prison, Chandrashekhar’s had alleged that he made payments not only to Jain and Goel but also to the Aam Aadmi Party to the tune of Rs 50 crore as he was promised an important position in the party in south India.

The allegations put the AAP in the vortex of a political storm with rivals BJP and Congress training their guns at its party chief Arvind Kejriwal. The L-G’s office on October 18 forwarded Chandrashekhar’s letter to Delhi Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar for suitable action.
