Kids learn about fire drills & rescue
Students of DAV Public School, Safilguda had a field day on Tuesday playing the role of fire-fighters as they enacted mock fire drills and rescue missions.
The programme was organized by the Fire and Security Association of India (FSAI), Hyderabad Chapter in association with city fire brigade.
Upon completion of the mission, K Rachit, a class X student said, “This was the first time I was holding an extinguisher and it was easy to use. Now I have confidence to douse off fires in case of a fire accident.” Most of the were upbeat about the drill and felt such workshops help them to be mentally prepared in case of fire mishaps.
Students were also taught to handle different branch pipes, connected to the fire engine vehicle, live demonstration of crisis, rescue methods, wet drill and use of life jackets.
K Vijay Kumar, station fire Officer, Secunderabad observed, “Awareness about fire services from a young age is very important. Here we taught students not only to handle fire accidents but also prevent them. We also taught them how to cooperate and help firemen during operations.” He added, “We even covered basic causes of fire in houses like leakage from gas cylinders and how to tackle them. The students were impressive and am sure when the need arises they will rise to the occasion.” FSAI has been conducting such workshops for the past two years. “A fire accident in a school in Tamil Nadu which claimed lives of over 90 students a few years back made us realise the importance of fire safety in school.
Since then we have been striving to make school children aware of fire safety. We concentrate on not only guiding students to help themselves but also to rescue others,” said Shaik Ishq, secretary, FSAI.
