HYDERABAD: After imposing one-way on many city roads, traffic police are now toying with the idea of making changes at the busy Khairatabad Junction. They plan to bar vehicular traffic towards the NIMS hospital side (to reach Punjagutta) from the Vidyut Soudha side.
If one-way is implemented, motorists coming from the Khairatabad side will either have to take the Raj Bhavan road towards Punjaguatta or if they pass through Vidyut Soudha, they will have to take the left turn from KCP Junction towards Taj Krishna hotel, to get to Punjagutta.
Traffic officials told Expresso the move was being considered to improve traffic movement.
However, one-ways which have already been imposed, even on experimental basis, have not found favour with motorists. If the police decide banning vehicles towards the NIMS side, motorists will be forced to travel longer distance, which means burning extra fuel.
At Banjara Hills road number one, closing of the U-turn near the Taj Banjara has made motorists travel upto road number 12 to take the turn. Similarly, near the Alfa hotel, entry was barred for motorists wanting to go towards Monda Market. This has made them go around several localities like the Clock Tower, Patny, General Bazar before reaching Monda Market.
“It used to take just five minutes to travel from Secunderabad station to my shop in Monda Market. But now have to travel around one-and-ahalf km extra to reach my shop,” R Jagadeesh, a cloth merchant said. However, chaotic conditions near the station have remained the same. As reported in this newspaper a few months ago, for free movement of the chief minister K Rosaiah’s convoy, entry for Light Motor Vehicles and Heavy Motor Vehicles were barred on Dharamkaran road.
However, the one-way experiment between Krishna Nagar and Jubilee Hills has improved traffic flow. One-way traffic has been already imposed on 10 roads. A proposal is now in the offing to try it out on eight other city roads.
