HYDERABAD: A 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour, who is also a relative of the victim, in a tribal hamlet within Shamshabad police station limits. When village elders suggested to her parents to get the victim married off to the perpetrator, she tried to kill herself.
Police told that it was her 43-year-old uncle who had raped her and the incident came to light only when the girl got pregnant. Shamshabad inspector C Anjaiah said the victim was a class VIII drop-out and had been living in the neighbourhood of the accused, Jayaram. Perturbed at the villagers’ suggestion, her parents approached the police.
“The victim, declining to follow the diktat of village elders and marry the rapist attempted suicide by consuming poison on Tuesday afternoon at her residence. Locals shifted her to a nearby hospital. Her condition is stable,’’ police said.
The victim’s mother lodged a complaint with Shamshabad police on Tuesday stating that her daughter was raped by Jayaram. Police booked a case against the accused.
