HYDERABAD: Tragedy struck a marriage party after three women members, who were on their way to attend the function, got crushed under the wheels of a van at Malakpet while three youngsters including two students were killed in a road accident at Hayathnagar in separate incidents on Sunday.

In the first incident the van rolled down a steep incline running down three women and injuring four others before coming to a halt after ramming into a roadside tea stall. According to Malakpet police inspector N Satyanarayana, nearly 30 members of bridegroom party from Malkajgiri were on their way to Hamal Basti near Asmangadh to attend an engagement function.

“The van could not climb a steep incline and came to a halt after travelling nearly 150 yards. Some men travelling in the van got down and placed a granite under the wheels of the van to ensure that the vehicle do not roll down the road,'' the inspector said. Even as the women members were alighting down, the wheels of the van ran over the granite and the vehicle rolled down the steep road hitting nearly five members.

Three of them, Anasuya (50), Yellamma (75) and Narsamma (45), came under the wheels of the vehicle. Anasuya died instantly while the two others died while being treated at a private hospital. Two other women Chandrakala and Kanaka Lakshmi, also suffered injuries and are undergoing treatment.

“The vehicle rolled down nearly 75 yards below before coming to a halt after ramming into a tea stall,'' Satyanarayana said.

A worker in the tea stall, Basith, and a customer, Anjaiah, suffered injuries.

The van driver fled from the spot. “The driver should have stayed in his seat and applied the brakes and put the vehicle in gear so that the vehicle did not roll down. He, however, came out of the cabin resulting in the mishap,'' the police said. Cases under various Sections of the IPC were registered against the driver and a hunt was launched to nab him.

Meanwhile, in another incident three youngsters rammed their vehicle into a roadside electric pole at Qutbullapur under the Hayathnagar police limits late Saturday night.

Three friends, V Anil Kumar (19), a driver, D Bharat Kumar (21), a ITI student from a college in Musheerabad and V Uttej Kumar (19), a student of Vignan degree college at Musheerabad were killed in the mishap.

Police said the trio hail from Ghanapuram in Ghatkesar and were returning home from their friend's house in LB Nagar. They were passing through the Nagole-Ghanapuram bypass road passing through Qutbullapur when Anil Kumar, who is suspected to be driving the vehicle at a high speed, rammed into a roadside electric pole.The trio died instantly.
