Golfers join fight against cancer

HYDERABAD: Putting the cause for raising cancer awareness above all, close to 150 golfers will participate in the Cancer Crusaders Invitation Cup-2012 at the EMAAR MGF Boulder Hills Golf Club on March 3 and 4. Five clubs from Hyderabad and six players from Delhi and Bangalore will play at the fundraiser for the CURE Foundation.

“I am honoured to be a part of a cause such as this. Spreading awareness leads to early detection and cure of the disease,” said actor Akkineni Nagarjuna at a press conference here on Monday. Teams of four each will play in the scramble and the best shots selected.

The celebrity play-off on March 4 at 7 pm promises to bring together politicians, business executives, entrepreneurs, doctors and administrators for a putting competition at the 18th hole. Minister of Information and Public Relations DK Aruna and Consul General of United States of America in Hyderabad Katherine Dhanani will be among those present.

“The event is being organized for the dual purpose of raising awareness regarding cancer and to create awareness among the affluent classes who consider cancer a poor man’s disease.

In the year 2010, nine lakh new cancer cases were detected in the country. Though the disease is curable in 80 per cent of the cases, especially among the children, lack of awareness and early detection lead to a large number of casualties,” said Dr P Vijay Anand Reddy, founder of the CURE Foundation. The foundation has so far worked with 500 underprivileged children to provide them with cancer treatment and rehabilitation.
