HYDERABAD: A division bench of the High Court comprising justice L Narasimha Reddy and justice KG Shankar on Thursday directed the authorities concerned to form special teams to check pollution by pharmaceutical companies in Nalgonda district.

Dealing with a writ petition filed by some villagers, the bench observed that the district had already been hit by the fluorosis problem and pollution by industrial effluents needed to be checked. It directed the RDO and the AP Pollution Control Board to form special teams and ask them to visit the pharmaceutical units located in Choutuppal, Samsthan Narayanpur and Pochampally mandals. The teams should check whether the company has treatment facilities and are functioning to the optimum level. Industries, which do not fulfil the norms, should be closed down. The process has to be completed within two weeks.

The petitioners complained that several pharmaceutical companies located in the above mandals were dumping effluents in canals and tanks, and on road margins at night. There was no response from the government to the villagers' request to take action against the erring companies.
