HYDERABAD: Police on Friday busted a notorious attention diversion gang comprising five members including four women and recovered 14 tola gold ornaments from them. According to the police, as many as five cases were registered in Charminar, Moghalpura and Hussainialam in connection with these thefts.

The accused include Ranga Gouda Ashok, resident of Jagadgirigutta, his wife Yadamma and three other women, Bailu alias Padma, Komra Renuka and Banda Anitha, all residents of Fatehnagar. Police said Ashok works as a welder but financial problems led him to form a gang that stole by diverting attention.

Bailu and Yadamma identify ladies while they shop and when they get a chance, divert their attention using a purse with fake gold coins in it. Later, they steal their gold. On January 5, Charminar police received a complaint from Ch Sunitha, a resident of Gachibowli, who said that she had been relieved of gold ornaments in this fashion.

Police recovered 14 tola gold from the accused, who also reportedly confessed to the crime.
